1. Make a list of recipients and categorise themI'm sure you already know that it is 5 times LESS EXPENSIVE to keep an existing customer than it is to win a new one. For this reason the most important recipient of your corporate gifts are going to be your ongoing clients. I recommend you grade them as A or B grade depending on their current spend, or their potential spend. This way you can give better gifts to your better clients. The other essential recipient is your staff. Don't forget they are your most valuable asset and should be rewarded and encouraged accordingly. You may also want to consider suppliers. I find that the benefit of giving your major suppliers a gift at Christmas outweighs the costs exponentially. The final group of recipients is prospects. Winning new business is hard, and Christmas is the perfect time to give your prospects a bit of a softener. 2. Define your budgetI always find it best to finalise your list of recipients and grade them before you set a budget. With a list of recipients in front of you, you can make a more educated decision on the value of the goodwill you will receive and therefore set a more realistic budget. Once again you may want to split the budget into recipient types or into A and B graders. 3. Decide on your motiveThere are 3 main motives you can choose, it is often best to go with 2 or 3 different gifts as you will find there are different motives for the different recipients. First is the straight out Thank You. These gifts will be given to your suppliers, staff and to your best customers. Thank You gifts may or may not be directly related to your industry or business. Effective Thank You gifts can include cooler bags, logo confectionery, embroidered towels or corporate jackets. The second motive is the Reminder. The Reminder gift is perfect for your prospects and new clients. A Reminder gift is should be something that is either industry related and shows what you are capable of (eg. A clothing wholesaler might give a retail store their most popular T-Shirt), or alternatively a gift that will stay in front of your potential client and remind them or your products or services and your contact details. Metal gift pens, mouse mats, and travel mugs make great Reminder gifts. 4. Brainstorm IdeasNow you know your recipients, your budget and your motives, brainstorm some ideas. Try to come up with 2 or 3 that you think would be effective for each of your client types or motives. 5. Speak to the expertsNow is the time to call your preferred Promotional Items supplier. Let them know know your quantities, budgets, motives, and the ideas you have brainstormed. Be sure to ask what they have on special or what clearance lines are available because this is a great way to save a lot of money. A good promotional company will have enough information to present you with a proposal that meets all your criteria. 6. Make the purchaseDon't procrastinate. Once you have a proposal you are happy with go ahead and make the purchase.
